Inazō Nitobe notes that lying and equivocation are considered cowardly. He asserts that samurais were synonymous with Honesty and that their word carried such weight that their promises were usually fulfilled, and often without any written agreement. Among the incentives for Honesty, it is the philosophical one that earns it a higher rank within the virtues.
